5G or fifth generation wireless systems is the proposed next generation of telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G LTE network.
The final standards for 5G would be set come 2018 by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which is also being referred to as International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)-2020.
Carriers, chipmakers, OEMS and OSATs, such as Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Amkor Technology, Inc., have been preparing for this next-generation (5G) wireless standard, as mobile systems and base stations will require new and faster application processors, basebands and RF devices.
5G is likely to be build upon the existing LTE networks.
Where would 5G be used
5G technology is envisioned to be the network for the Internet of Things. To achieve this 5G technology will have to have lower latency than 4G equipment and lower battery consumption, in order to support huge number of devices which require longer battery life.
With the expected increase in video traffic higher speeds would be needed for applications such as streaming video, video conferencing and virtual reality. In order to achieve this type of performance, the network will likely need a lt of small cell coverage and will take advantage of higher bandwidth spectrum.
5G technology is also expected to be used in lifeline communications in times of natural disaster, self driving cars and smart roads.
When is 5G launching
Sometime in 2018 the first official 5G launches followed with broad deployment in 2019. The schedule was previously set for 2019-2020, but carriers and equipment manufacturers figured out an accelerated schedule earlier this year.
When is 5G expected in Nigeria
It has been predicted that Nigeria and other countries in sub-Saharan Africa will witness their first 5G subscriptions in the next five years.
The number of 5G subscription in SSA is expected to reach two million by 2023, according to the November edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report.
